Analysis & Reports

Our role as providers of the Impact & Insight Toolkit (Toolkit) means we are in a privileged position, having access to aggregated data from the sector’s evaluation activity. We are committed to using this data to provide value back to the sector in a way that supports insight and understanding of their work whilst maintaining the privacy of the people and organisations who own the data. Our data science and research team does this through downloadable datasets, research, reports, and dashboards, all of which can be found on this page.

Datasets

The published datasets contain data collected by arts and cultural organisations using the Toolkit.

CWC is committed to transparency and collaboration. It is our hope that interested researchers from any field – culturally focussed or otherwise – might combine the Toolkit data with their own data or other datasets to support their research.

Benchmarking Data (using 2016-2024 data)

This dataset contains statistical data relating to ‘dimension’ questions, enabling users of dimensions to explore the data collected and find the most appropriate benchmarks for their organisation and the works they deliver.

This benchmarking dataset contains statistical data relating to ‘dimensions’ questions so that users of the Impact & Insight Toolkit can explore the data collected within the project and find the most appropriate benchmarks for their organisation and the works they deliver. For detailed contextual information, please see the blogpost. For basic guidance on navigating the dataset, please see the video.

Data from Individual Respondents (using 2019-2023 data)

The datasets accessed here include anonymised responses from individuals. The specific fields included have been chosen to ensure the anonymity of both the individuals who answered the surveys and the organisations who collected the data. To that end, data fields providing a detailed description of the work being evaluated have been excluded.

The available V 1.0 and V 2.0 datasets contain data collected and submitted by Toolkit users during the 2019-23 ACE funding period. As such, the methodology used was designed to answer the question: ‘Does this work meet its creative intentions?’.

Reports

We undertake research to answer questions which the aggregated Toolkit data can help us to answer, or which will help users of the Toolkit and the wider sector to better evaluate their work. Our research typically involves a mix of literature review, data analysis, and engagement with people who use the Toolkit to evaluate. You can explore our published research and reports here. If you are interested in working with us on a research project please get in touch!

Evaluating Place-Based Work

This report reflects on the research project conducted in 2022-23, developing and testing new measurement statements reflecting the aims of place-based work.

As part of our ongoing work on the Impact & Insight Toolkit project, CWC designed a research project to work with cultural organisations to fill the gap in evaluation toolkits for place-based work by developing new measurement statements reflecting the aims of place-based work, and then testing those statements through surveys.

Dimensions - The History and Development

This report considers the history of 'dimensions', standardised questions that are developed in collaboration with both the cultural sector and funders, which are a key feature in Toolkit surveys.

This report considers the history of ‘dimensions’, a specific question type which is used within Impact & Insight Toolkit surveys to capture audience and participant agreement levels to desired outcomes.  It outlines which dimensions were created when and the process by which this occurred.

Data Research Report: How who we are influences the creative works that speak to us

This report examines how different artforms speak to different groups of people in different ways. By looking at responses to the Impact & Insight Toolkit surveys, grouping the responses by age group and gender, we start to see some indicative patterns and relationships which we think merit further discussion and enquiry.

Sentiment Framework Research Report

Recommendation report identifying existing sentiment frameworks suitable for the Impact & Insight Toolkit

This report identifies and recommends existing sentiment frameworks suitable for the Impact & Insight Toolkit. The report has been conducted in response to NPO requests for new sentiment dimensions to capture overall feelings among audiences and peers. NPO feedback at the Artform and Museum Metric Strand workshops suggested that the Toolkit needed to capture a breadth of emotions, including negative feelings. Identifying an appropriate sentiment framework will allow CWC to implement a new set of sentiment dimensions within the Toolkit.

Demographics Questions Review

Recommendation report identifying a richer set of demographic questions suitable for the Impact & Insight Toolkit

This report acknowledges the importance of asking demographic-based questions within Impact & Insight Toolkit surveys. It details research that has occurred and recommendations that have emerged from this research. This report also explains how these recommendations will be implemented within the Toolkit for the remainder of the project.

Dashboards

Our dashboards are interactive tools, built by our data science team using Microsoft’s Power Bi platform, which give Toolkit users access to an anonymised aggregate dataset, made up of data collected and submitted by Toolkit users. We’re always keen to receive your feedback on the tools we create to support you, please get in touch if you have any suggestions or requests.
